Mission Statement

To encourage and protect the Recreational Use, Economic Development, Natural Recovery and Scientific Study of Mount St. Helens and the surrounding area.

What We’re Looking for:

A Congressional study, conducted by Congresswomen Jamie Herrera-Buetler to review:

Mt. St. Helens Advisory Committee Recommendations – To evaluate the current management model’s progress, success (or failure), at meeting the committee’s individual line item recommendations. And, in the event of lack of completion, identify the contributing factors and possible resolutions.

Scientific Study Areas – To evaluate in a systematic manner, the currently closed and/or restricted areas, to determine if there is still a reason for them to remain restricted. Areas that are no longer considered sensitive, scientifically unique, or physically dangerous, should again be made available to the general public. Areas that are moderately sensitive, should be opened to professional “outfitters”, and thus made available with some controls.

Funding – to evaluate and determine, the annual operating requirements for the monument, and related area. Subsequent additions to the managing agency’s budget, should then be made to ensure continued adequate annual funding.

Road Access – To evaluate the best method to develop and fund, a “connector road” between SR 504 and SR 12; thus linking Mt. St. Helens with Mt. Rainier and creating a “loop route”.

Recreation – To evaluate the best methods to open as much land and access as possible to general public use; with consideration to scientific, ecological and safety issues.

Economic Development – To evaluate the current management model, and its relationship to economic activity in the monument, and surrounding area. This will be done with the intent of redeveloping Mt. St. Helens, as an “economic engine” for the area.
